First Lecture on Lecture on Demand Series: Introduction to Eclipse IDE

It was a great pleasure for me to talk about Eclipse IDE today at Carleton. This was a warm up for IEEE Computer Society Carleton University SB Chapter’s new Lecture on Demand series. Technically it was the first lecture, but students will be offered a lot more topics to choose from in future.

What is Lecture on Demand :

From past, we have learned, when we organized a series of tutorials, it did not work out well for different reasons. We have chosen topics, and asked students to come- and that did not work out very well as students might not have felt the need of that specific topic at that very moment of their life. This is why we are taking a bottom-up approach, where we will just provide a list of topics, and students will choose topics they are interested in and will let us know by an online form. We have plan to use bulletin board to let students organize their own tutorial session. We are calling it Lecture on Demand Series. More information on this will be available from beginning of January, 2010 at http://ieee.carleton.ca .

Introduction to Eclipse IDE:

From few of the topics students were asking for help during last few months, we have chosen Eclipse to talk about. So we covered very basic about Eclipse. How to use it, and where to start from and answered a philosophical question “Why to use Eclipse?”. The slides are available here. As it was my first public lecture, I tried to deliver as much as I could. I hope to improve the slides in future. All the topics we covered in the session are not in the slides (I used slides as an outline.) Some of the usage and tips about Eclipse I have demonstrated in the class by doing them. So, in future versions, there will be more information added to the slides.

The next topic will be either of intro to PHP programming or intro to Ubuntu. IEEE Computer Society, Carleton U Student Branch Chapter will have The OMG (Ottawa’s Most Genius) Programming Contest on November 12th and Ubuntu Release Party on November 14th at Carleton University. That is all for tonight! Check the IEEE Carleton site for latest updates!
