Unmanageable Web: Information Aging Began

Information

Web is huge- about 1.7 billion people use it. You may ask, while talking about the size of web, why I have used the number of people instead of number of website? The answer lies in the modern web technologies. Probably I would use the number of websites, if it were the era of web 1.0 technologies only. But web 2.0 has given power to people. There were few good reasons for that. Web 1.0 was becoming so huge, it became almost impossible for the administrators to keep all the information updated. There were too less help and too much information. Thanks to web 2.0, which enabled any user to update those information.
The Price:
Nothing comes for free. The price administrators had to pay:

  • The volume of information added/updated in any website is a lot. Now most of the web 2.0 websites has the option for reporting abuse. Instead of going into every single content (which is impossible at this day), they receive complains from users and takes step based on that. What if no one complained about a particular abusive content?
  • It is impossible to control the visitors. A good number of them are spambots or other hazardous users. Some webmasters block users from particular region; because they are of no interest- but this is not very effective solution.
  • Who will guarantee the validity of data? Except few successful websites like wikimedia foundation, almost every one is failing to enrich their content with valid data. Random wrong information, or rumor is hurting the modern base of information.

Invalid Information:
When web 2.0 came into operation about 10 years ago, all the information we would see on web were relatively new. Regardless of huge availability of wrong and useless information, for an advanced user, it would not take too long to find the proper information. Now that the web 2.0 started to grow up- very soon it was supposed to be a teenager- grey hairs are becoming visible more and more. While searching for any information, a lot of time you will notice the information you will find are few years old. In some cases the updated contents are updated, some cases they are not.
The concern here is, at the dawn of web, or for any user who enters into the world of web, tended to put so much information, later they become very difficult for them to update them. Websites including very important organizations, business corporations- every one is suffering from the same problem. How many times you have found outdated information in different organization’s own website?
Last, but not least:
To me it is just another sign of “Information Aging” on the web. As information aging began, is it the end of the web? No! Definitely not! But Internet needs to go towards a new direction to get rid of all aged information. How? That probably would be the right question to ask.
